Synopsis

The Wellstone Project, a musical play written by NHCC theatre alumni Bryn Tanner, with music by NHCC theatre alumni Zach Miller, is a look back at the life and legacy of United States Senator Paul Wellstone from Minnesota, who was tragically killed in an airplane crash in Eveleth, Minnesota in 2002. An outspoken and fiercely progressive politician, Wellstone was a voice for those who were often ignored or discriminated against. He started his career as a political science professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he inspired his students to become politically and socially active to help create the change they wanted to see. After nearly 20 years of teaching, he decided that he could affect even greater change by running for political office, and eventually won election as a U.S senator, where he became known as ‘the conscience of the Senate.’ The play takes us on a journey into Paul’s early life, his marriage to his wife Sheila, his successes and defeats, his short-lived run for president, and the legacy of his progressive politics.
